Recap of Police Outreach Event

Printer-friendly version

Last Saturday's Community Outreach Event, put on by the Brisbane Poilce Department, was a fabulous opportunity for community members of all ages to come to the Community Park and learn about the department and its various functions.  Did you know that Brisbane has a sergeant and two officers that serve on the Northern Regional San Mateo County SWAT team, which is comprised of officers from neighboring agencies in addition to our own?  Well, such is the case, and those who came got to find out more about that, as well as take a look inside the equipment the team uses, such as the "Bear" SWAT vehicle.   The event proved to be a great opportunity to get to know the officers, ask questions, and provided PLENTY of photo opportunities.  In addition to the "Bear" SWAT vehicle being on display was the PD motorcycle, patrol cars, and some of officers' equipment that the public could see, touch, and even try on!  Judging from the pictures, it's likely that it's not just the PD that can say last week's open house was a worthwhile community event to attend.

Lipman Slide Repair

Printer-friendly version

The Lipman Slide Repair Project is breaking ground...literally.  On Monday, contractors arrived on-site and the equipment (made up of 1 bulldozer excavator, 1 padfoot compactor, 1 forklift, and 1 skip loader) made its way up Visitacion Wednesday afternoon. From now until right before school is back in session, contractors will be working to cut back the hillside, which moved outwards towards the Lipman tennis courts as a result of the mudslide that occured there during the 2006 winter storms.  Below is a "before" picture of the construction site, and the aforementioned equipment:

To prevent future mudslides from ocurring in this area, a retaining wall will be installed on the hillside.  The project is anticipated to be largely paid for through a FEMA reimburseable grant, as well as some State dollars.  Work will continue throughout the summer months and conclude by the beginning of the school year in mid-August.  During this time, the tennis courts will be closed, and the area of the playing field will be limited, indicated by the orange construction fencing.  We appreciate your patience and understanding during this time of construction and rehabilitation.

No Better Time to Plan

When it comes to emergency preparedness, other tasks may seem to take precedence - meeting a deadline for work, hitting the gym, getting dinner on the table, etc.  Today, however, staff from City Hall carried out an exercise they knew was necessary to perform.  This morning, they gathered in the Emergency Operations Center (EOC), located on the 2nd floor of City Hall, and proceeded to get "briefed" on the situation: at 6:00am, City had suffered a 6.2 earthquake, which caused a fire at Brisbane Elementary School and a mudslide on the 200 block of Alvarado St.  Staff then broke out into their various sections - Logistics, Administration, Finance, Planning, Communications, and Operations.  The room became abuzz with energy as staff worked quickly to activate their sections.  Pretty soon, the phones started ringing, with mock callers inquiring about where they should evacuate to.  Each section carried out their duties fairly smoothly, working with one another to pass information.

After the exercise was over, staff debriefed about areas they felt could be improved, with Office of Emergency Services (OES) Director, Randy Breault, taking down notes, along with OES Coordinator Shelley Romriell.  This proved to be an invaluable exercise, and one in which staff left feeling they were now in better positions to be able to serve the Brisbane residents in the case of an emergency situation ever descending upon this community.
