Dan Sorrentino - 2013

Daniel Sorrentino, the recipient of the City of Brisbane's Volunteer of the Year award in 2013, was a remarkable individual known affectionately as "Dan Can Do." His recent passing has left a void in the community, as his efforts and dedication touched the lives of many.

With a background in construction, Dan generously volunteered his time and expertise to assist children in building their derby cars before during the annual "Day at the Park" event. His derby workshop empowered young participants to bring their imaginative designs to life, nurturing their creativity and fostering a sense of accomplishment.

In addition to his work with the derby cars, Dan played a pivotal role in converting empty warehouses in Crocker Industrial Park, which served as the venue for the Brisbane School District's largest annual fundraising event, "Spring Thing." He safely and creatively transformed the spaces, which would accommodate upwards of 800 people and ensured a successful and enjoyable experience for all attendees.

His commitment to the betterment of the School District was further evident in his efforts to collect bottles and cans for recycling. Dan took it upon himself to gather these recyclables and bring them to recycling centers. He also collected e-waste from homes and City Hall, recycling them all to benefit the schools. His efforts not only promoted sustainability but also provided support of over $7,000 for educational initiatives.

Dan was an active member of the Brisbane Lions Club, dedicating his time and energy to various community events. He could often be found setting up for events and manning the grill, ensuring the success of Lions Club activities. During the holiday season, Dan would assist in moving Christmas trees from the Christmas tree lot to those who needed assistance moving them, bringing holiday cheer to numerous Brisbane residents.

Daniel Sorrentino's legacy as a dedicated volunteer and compassionate community member will forever be cherished in Brisbane. His nickname, "Dan Can Do," perfectly encapsulates his can-do attitude, resourcefulness, and willingness to lend a helping hand wherever needed. Although his physical presence is dearly missed, his spirit of service and genuine care for others continues to inspire all who had the privilege of knowing him.
