EV Charging Update

EV Charger Installation

There’s good news and bad news…

The good news: construction is beginning on Monday (Jan 23) to install Level 2 EV charging at three city sites. First up will be City Hall, with seven chargers available to the public and three for future Police fleet needs. In addition, conduit will be included for the future installation of a fast charger. Construction at City Hall is expected to take about two weeks, with the areas marked in red in the below image temporarily blocked off. The crew expects to begin construction at Mission Blue Center on Feb 3rd, where 10 Level 2 stations will be installed for public use. Subsequently, stations will be installed in the Bayshore Park & Ride Lot, with their availability pending a PG&E service upgrade.

The charging stations are largely funded by grants from CALeVIP (a state program) and Peninsula Clean Energy. The installation of Chargie networked chargers manufactured by EvoCharge is being completed under a contract to PCS Energy approved by Council in 2021, with subcontractors Doneen Electrical, and EF Gomez doing the underground work. We appreciate your patience during construction and look forward to announcing the availability of these new charging locations in short order!

The bad news: the existing fast charger at the Brisbane Village is permanently out of service. It stopped working last June and attempted repairs were unable to get it functioning again. As one of the first-generation fast chargers, ChargePoint will “End of Life” this model in March, meaning no hardware or software support would be available for it. City staff is looking into options for replacing the unit, including potential grants.
