Community Park Playground Resurfacing Completed!

The contractor has finished the playground resurfacing work at the Community Park and the fencing is coming down this Friday, 2/23. At that point, the playground along with the Community Park restrooms will be re-opened to the public. The temporary porta potty and wash station in the park will be picked up on Monday, 2/26. The Community Park Playground Resurfacing Project is funded by Prop 68 California Department of Parks and Recreation and the City of Brisbane. This project has been in motion since the Council adopted a resolution in 2020 to apply for CA Prop 68 grant funds, supporting the City's preservation of a valued community asset. Thank you to California Drought, Water, Parks, Climate, Coastal Protection and Outdoor Access for All Act of 2018 and representatives: Gavin Newsom, Wade Crowfoot, Armando Quintero, California Department of Parks and Recreation and Brisbane’s City Council. Additionally, Brisbane Parks and Recreation & Public Works staff, Mike Glynn, and Robertson Recreational Surfaces for your efforts on this project.

The Community Park Improvements Subcommittee met on 2/6/2024.

City staff provided updates regarding the playground resurfacing project & additional context for the conversation which included: scope review, community response & City Council direction for staff to evaluate community priorities for the park overall and results from the 2022 Needs Assessment Survey that demonstrated a high desire among community members to improve Community Park facilities & amenities. Attendees shared their considerations for improvements and next steps were identified.

  • The subcommittee is continuing to identify key stakeholders interested in supporting the process & serving as project advocates.
  • Prepare a community-wide survey to be understand what residents want & their overall priorities for the park both short & long term.
  • Research grant opportunities and feasibility of leveraging local "large-scale" businesses for funding.

The next Subcommittee meeting has yet to be scheduled, but will be shared out to the community soon. If you are interested in getting involved with the Community Park Improvements Subcommittee reach out to Parks & Recreation Supervisor, Nicole Houghton.

Earlier this week (week of 1/29/2024), fencing went up around the playground (including the swing area) bathrooms, and one adjacent picnic area for the poured-in-place resurfacing project to take place. In lieu of public access to the restrooms, a port-a-potty and handwashing station has been placed onsite where they will remain until construction is complete. The work is expected to take 2-3 weeks, weather-dependent. While the playground and swing areas will be temporarily off-limits, this is a reminder that the Tot Lot is open to the public from sunrise to sunset.

The Community Park playground resurfacing project will begin work onsite on Monday, 1/29/2024, weather dependent. Signage will be placed around the perimeter of the playground noting that the area is off limits for the duration of construction and a fence will be positioned around the playground, bathrooms, and one adjacent picnic area. In lieu of public access to the restrooms, the City will provide a port-a-potty and handwashing station onsite until construction is complete. We appreciate your cooperation and patience during this time, and we look forward to reopening the facility once the work is complete!

Interim City Manager's Blast 1/10

At the Thursday, 11/2/2023 City Council meeting, staff provided an update regarding the playground resurfacing project at the Community Park.  This project has been in motion since the Council adopted a resolution in 2020 to apply for CA Prop 68 grant funds, supporting the City's preservation of a valued community asset. A majority of the Council expressed their support of the project moving forward with full replacement of the deteriorating rubber surface in order to mitigate existing risks and to maintain ADA accessibility for all members of the public.  The Council also expressed support for working with the public to identify opportunity spaces and alternative funding for a new sand area away from the rubber surfacing.
