Cell Towers & Wireless Telecommunications Facilities

Permit Required

Minor modifications to an existing wireless telecommunication facility that do not substantially modify its physical dimensions are subject only to building permit approval per Section 17.32.032 - Wireless Telecommunications Facilities of the BMC. This also includes ministerial approval of emergency standby generators that conform to the requirements of AB 2421 (2020) for macro cell sites, until such provisions expire 1/1/2024.

Proposals for new telecommunications facilities or substantial modifications to existing telecommunications facilities require an administrative permit from the Zoning Administrator or a use permit from the Planning Commission. Planning applications are available online or at City Hall and the New Facilities and Substantial Modification to Existing Telecommunications checklist provides more information on submittal requirements for proposals that require a permit from Planning.
