What is an ADU?

Also known as second units, in-law, or granny units, they are small dwellings that provide independent living facilities (kitchen, bathroom, and sleeping area) on the same property as the primary residential building.

What is a JADU?

A JADU is an additional, independent living unit created through the conversion of existing legally permitted living space in a single-family dwelling.

Have an illegal ADU or an ADU with building violations?

Under current State law, it is much easier to convert what once was an illegal ADU into a legally recognized unit. You may also request correction of any violation be delayed for five years. This provision will remain in effect until January 1, 2030. Please see the ADU Compendium for more information or contact staff with questions.

Get Help with the Approval Process

Most ADUs and JADUs only require a Building Permit application. The City is accepting building permit applications online through the GreenVue Permit Center. You may email, call, or visit the Community Development Department to learn more about the permitting process.
